App Trailer
The Brief
The initial brief asked to explore a demo app with minimal 2D UI that allows users to customize a 3D model in their environment. Because this app will be used as a demo, the experience needed to be applicable to all types of environments ranging from meeting rooms to busy conferences. Additionally, it needed to be scaleable for future additions including additional 3D models or customization options.
Inspiration
I researched similar experiences in AR, VR, and relevant spatial fields including video games. I wanted to find examples of customizing 3D objects in a 3D environment. I found inspiration in character customization for videos games. I also explored how similar AR apps approach placement of 3D objects and found inspiration in the IKEA AR experience.
Early Sketches
Tools used - Pencil and paper + Whiteboard
In this early ideation phase, I sketched out minimal 2D UI that provided customization options for users. Utilizing the panel style UI in video games, I designed a 2D panel that features tabs labeled with custom icons. I brainstormed a naming convention for these tabs so it could be expanded in future updates. This panel would move with the user and be able to be placed anywhere in their environment.
Initial Designs (and Research Feedback)
Tools used: Figma
While adhering with the Magic Leap design system, I designed a portrait info panel that appeared to the right of the 3D model. However, after testing on the headset, this design was inconvenient and the user had to have their head on a swivel between the panel and the 3D model. Therefore, I created a customization panel that lives below the 3D model. The user can keep their head in the same relative position and pivot their eyes between the UI and the 3D model.
Final Design
Watch final design of the Configurator app in action. The final design features the simple 2D panel UI shown above with streamlined customization options. The 3D objects can be placed anywhere in the users space using the floor and wall snapping feature. Additionally, the app allows the user to turn on and off Dynamic Dimming which demonstrates the innovation feature.
The Configurator app is available now for download on the Magic Leap 2 headset.
